Most important early American carved mahog Shepherdhess attrib to Samuel McIntyre or Simeon Skillin. The same sliding dovetailed keyway construction that appears on Eastern MA blockfront furniture is evident on the underside of the base. In graphite on underside appears the name E.H. Derby which may indicate that it came from the Elias Hasket Derby mansion in Salem, MA - authentication from a Smithsonian Museum Curator - The best American carved figure we have ever seen - 23 1/4" tall
